ABOUT HEART OF TIBET

Heart of Tibet is a very candid view of His Holiness during a Kalachakra Initiation. Starting his day with 4 AM meditation, he conducts press interviews, complex Kalachakra rituals and touches the hearts of everyone he encounters.  Hon. Jimmy Carter, former President of the United States, introduces the film.

ABOUT SECULAR MEDITATION

Buddhist practice has its foundation in meditation, where one learns to focus on the present moment, rather than dwelling on the past or imagining the future.  Meditation is, therefore, an instrument for shaping and transforming the mind, achieving clarity of perception, voiding mental afflictions and liberating oneself from cyclic existence.  Much more superior to physical happiness, mental happiness enables us to overcome and even subdue physical discomfort and problems.

In Secular Meditation, His Holiness, the Dalai Lama stresses that a distinction needs to be made between religious subjects, such as faith, and what the Dalai Lama calls “basic human good qualities,” such as compassion, love, forgiveness, harmony and brother-and sister-hood.  Likewise, meditation should be looked on a not as religious subject but, rather, as a training of the mind to achieve a state of mental comfort.  By way of example, the Dalai Lama explains the positive conclusions of a meditation on compassion, making clear the relevance of meditation to anyone’s life, no matter their religious persuasion.
