Lotus Lantern Int'l Meditation Center
Lotus Lantern Meditation Center is located on the fairly large island Kanghwa,
about 60 km to the west of Seoul. The land is surrounded by forest and very
quiet.
The building was started in spring 95 and finished in autumn 97 when the
opening ceremony was held. The center consists of a traditional wooden
Buddha-hall, a meditation hall and 3 western style houses for living. Our
facilities easily provide room for 8-10 resident members and for special
occasions or retreats we can accommodate about 25-30 people. We are a
small community of four foreign monks together with our Korean teacher and
belong to the Korean Zen-school, the Chogye-order.
Our daily life divides into equal phases of study, practice and work. Study
means that all members are encouraged to learn at least Korean and if
possible also Chinese, in order to be able to learn the Buddhas teaching from
native sources. That is in the morning we study while in the afternoon we work
in the garden. Further, integrated every morning and evening are periods of
meditation and chanting. Like this we hope to lead a balanced life without
straining either body or mind.
