The Zen Buddhist Temple of Chicago is the oldest continuously practicing Zen training temple in the U.S. As the abbot of our Soto temple, Kongo Roshi trains practitioners in zazen (sitting meditation). The teaching of Kongo Langlois, like that of his predecessor, Rev. Dr. Soyu Matsuoka, Roshi, is practical and straightforward, focusing on the cultivation of self confidence, self power, and moment to moment awareness. This is training in effective living. Roshi is a Zen master recognized by both the Soto and Rinzai schools. In addition to his thirty-five years of experience in Japanese Buddhism, Roshi has trained for over three decades in Taoist martial arts and other Chinese traditions. As the successor to Professor Huo Chi Kwang as director of the Chinese Cultural Academy, Roshi teaches many Taoist disciplines, such as Tai Chi Chuan and the Chinese Health Methods.

At the Zen Buddhist Temple of Chicago, we seek to provide an environment of support and encouragement where each individual can work toward resolving his or her own problems, while at the same time developing his or her own unique potential. Our goal is to assist the efforts of those who would be self-confident, self-responsible, and truly independent. Meditation services are held at 608 Dempster Street in Evanston on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 am to 12 noon and at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Roshi always gives a special Dharma talk at the Sunday service. Sesshin, extended meditation retreats, are held monthly.
