Wat Dhammaram and the Vipassana Meditation Center, originated from the Thai Buddhist Center of Illinois founded in 1974 under the laws of the State of Illinois by the Illinois and Midwestern Thai community. At that time, the status of the Center was raised to that of the Thai Buddhist Temple of Chicago, and the new name "Wat Dhammaram", was given by the Supreme Patriarch of the Thai Sangha. The objectives of the temple are to maintain, promote, and support Buddhist teaching and Thai culture, and to organize and unite Buddhist followers for religious worship and charitable activities.
Temple activities and services: Wat Dhammaram, the first Theravada Buddhist temple in the Midwest, and also the Vipassana Meditation Center, serves as a meditation center for people from all walks of life. There is a Sunday School for young students and adults, and a cultural center that is open to the public.
The temple also provides academic services to students from high schools, colleges and universities in Chicago and the surrounding area. It is a meeting place for the Buddhist Council of the Midwest, the regional headquarters of the American Buddhist Congress, the Homeowners Association of Nottingham Park, and co-sponsor of the Parliament of World Religions, 1993. The temple is now a main Theravada Buddhist learning center in the Midwest and a center for the Council of Thai Bhikkus in the USA. The temple also provides interfaith dialogues for all American religious communities, as well as source materials on Theravada Buddhism and Insight Meditation.
Meditation Instruction and Practice: Insight Meditation instruction and practice is given every Friday and Sunday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The Temple provides one-day, weekend, and weeklong insight meditation retreats for the public regularly.
