Wat Phrasriratanamahadhatu, a Therevadin Buddhist temple, was founded in 1992 by the Thai, Laotian and Cambodian communities in Chicago and other cities in Illinois and nearby states under the leadership of Phra Ratana Thongkrajai. Its objectives are to propagate the teachings of the Buddha, to fulfill the spiritual needs of Buddhists, to organize Buddhist ceremonies and activities, and to assist and promote educational and cultural activities in the Thai, Laotian and Cambodian communities.
Activities: There are two daily sessions of chanting and meditation at 5 a.m. in the morning and 5 p.m. in the evening. Dharma talks and meditation are held on Saturday and Sunday. There are monthly Meditation Retreats on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the second or third week of every month.
On Sunday there is a religious service at 9 a.m. which includes meditation, chanting, a Dharma talk and lunch offering. Wat Phrasriratanamahadhatu also celebrates religious ceremonies and festivals such as Magha Puja Day, Asalha Puja Day, Vassa Observance, Vassa Ending Day, and Songkran Day. Other activities include a Dharma book service and the distribution of free Dharma tapes. A monthly journal is also published and distributed free of charge.
