- The Milwaukee Zen Center is served by a five-member board of directors and relies on public donations for its support; Rev. Tozen Akiyama has been the resident priest since September 1985. Rev. Akiyama's lineage is the Soto Zen school founded by Dogen.
We offer daily zazen and monthly all-day sittings, a weekly study class and a monthly introductory course. All are welcome to practice zazen at the Milwaukee Zen Center in the morning or evening. Monday to Friday, Zazen and Kinhin sesshins are held from 6 to 7:30 a.m., with a service at 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 to 7:20 p.m. Saturday Zazen and Kinhin sesshins from 6 to 7:30 a.m., with a service at 7:30 and breakfast (with Oryoki) at 7:45 a.m. (*except on all-day sitting days). There is also a Saturday work period from 8:20 a.m. and a 9 a.m. class. The third Saturday of each month there is an All Day Sitting.
The first Wednesday of each month and Introductory Zazen Class is held at 6:30 p.m. Zazen instruction also available by appointment - call (414) 963-0526. A bimonthly newsletter is available to those requesting to be placed on the Center's mailing list.
