Founded in 1972 by Philip Kapleau, author of The Three Pillars of Zen and other works and founder of the Rochester Zen Center in upstate New York. In the tradition of the Harada-Yasutani lineage, both Soto and Rinzai elements are used in training, though emphasis is on koan work.
Training embraces seven-day sesshin, daily sittings, Sunday teishos, all-day sittings, weekend sesshins, residence training programs. Dokusan is available during the week and on Sundays through Sevan Ross, the resident teacher. The first Tuesday evening of most months is reserved for beginners as a workshop in Zen. There is no fee, but donations are welcome. The Center is solely supported by sesshin fees and membership dues.
