b) Stone Lanterns

These are usually found in the main courtyard (and at royal tombs). Usually stone lanterns are made of granite, beautifully decorated with different motifs. Near the top there is a square or octagonal shaped section where the oil lamp or candle was burned; the light is diffused through four openings, one in each direction-. These lanterns are often lit so that the monks and nuns can see their way to the Main Hall for the 3 a.m. chanting ceremony.
