What is Korean Buddhism? (extensive)

c) The Three Gates

After passing the above mentioned objects the real tour begins. You walk along a gently winding path which leads up to the first gate which is called "One Pillar" Gate. Then you pass through the second, "Four Guard-ians" Gate--a two-door building. Here the four awesome protectors of the temple greet you.

Nearby is the third gate called, the "Gate of Non-duality." This gate represents the fact that, though the visitor is passing from the secular world into the spiritual world of the temple, these two worlds are not different from one another, they are not-two, non-dual. Somewhere before reaching the main en-trance to the temple, the path crosses a bridge over a stream. This crossing is a symbolic purifi-cation.
