What is Korean Buddhism? (extensive)

b) Pudo

Pudo, stone monuments to famous monks, sometimes have the sari ("jewels" or small stone-like calcified relics left after cremation -- much venerated and respected by Buddhists everywhere) of the monk buried beneath them. Bulbous in shape, older or simpler ones often have small or large caps on top of them.

Pudo can be found in front, behind, or to the side of a temple complex. In Pomo-sa, in Pusan, they can easily be missed because they are so far to the side of the temple compound. In Kumsan-sa, near Kimje, they are several hundred meters beyond the compound walls. Sometimes, they are found standing alone and, it seems, forgotten in a remote area where other traces of the temple have disappeared.
