What is Korean Buddhism? (extensive)

a) Monuments

Monuments of various kinds are plentiful and their meaning can be guessed by their location and amount of inscription. Many lines of three Chinese characters is a listing of names of people who donated funds for building or restoration. Many characters on a stele with a turtle base will recount the history of the temple. If it is done by a famous person, there may be a separate information sign nearby, such as the one at Chikji-sa near Kimch'on by the famous philosopher-statesman, Yi Yulgok. If a stele and turtle base is near a pudo, it is a dedication to the monk whose ashes are enshrined in the pudo.
