What is Korean Buddhism? (extensive)

(vii) The Social Activities of the Bhikkunis

There is no record concerning the role of bhikkunis in society and their practices. But there is a record about a bhikkuni called Chihye who lived during the reign of King Chinp'yong who is reported to have held a special ceremony every spring and every fall, 10 days each for laymen and laywomen. She lived in Anhung-sa.

There is a special story recorded about her. Once, when she was preparing to repair one of the main halls, she had a dream in which it was revealed to her that there were over 5 kilos of gold under the statue ready to be used as payment for the repairing of the hall.

As in the case of Bhikkuni Chihye, other bhikkunis in the Shilla Kingdom had to be vigorous in helping Buddhism to become well settled and familiar to all classes of people.
