It is not very clear when Shilla women started to accept Buddhism. It is simply guessed that it must have been some time after the official recognition of Buddhism in Shilla in 527. There were many women supporters of the temples as well as many bhikkunis. Some women became temple servants, others devoted themselves as patrons. With the great devotion and variety of activities which women gave themselves to in the temples, their contribution was considerable.
