inside T'apsa

At the turn of the century, Buddhist layman Yi Kab-yong built about 80 stone pagodas over a period of 10 years under a cliff of the southern part of Mt. Maisan. He gathered stones from all over Korea for the pagodas, some of which are 10 meters tall. Adhering to strict asceticism and living on raw herbs and pine needles, he piled up stones day after day; they are so solidly placed that years of wind and storms have failed to destroy any of the pagodas.

A legend of T'apsa says that if one changes the water in the bowl offered to the Buddha inside the temple in winter, a mysterious 10-15-centimeter-long icicle will spring up from the bowl.
