view of Unmensa

Unmunsa Temple, one of Korea's major temples, is situated on Crouching Tiger Mountain. Originally called Taejakgapsa, "Great Magpie Hillside" Temple, in 937, the king who founded the Koryo Dynasty changed the name to Unmunsa, meaning "Cloud Gate" Temple.

The temple has many shrines, a huge, brand-new Main Hall, and the old Main Hall. There is also a famous tree said to be 500 years old, which is thought to have grown up from a branch planted by a passing monk.

In 1950, Unmunsa Temple became the largest ordained women's training center in Korea. About 250 students regularly follow a four year course in Buddhism. They learn the classic texts, Chinese characters and how to live ordained Buddhist lives. In addition they have classes in a wide range of modern subjects.
